Founded in 1881 as Marquette College, near what is now downtown Milwaukee Wisconsin, the university was named after the 17th Century missionary and explorer Father Jacques Marquette of the Society of Jesus. The new colleges top priority was to bring an affordable catholic education to the areas growing German immigrant population. Marquette University became the first coed catholic university in the world when it admitted its first female students in 1909.

Sporting their navy blue and gold uniforms, Marquette is a Division I member of the NCAA, and has competed in the Big East Conference since 2005. Since joining the Big East, their only conference championship has been by the men’s golf team, in 2008.

As a Division I school, the Golden Eaglesfield 11 varsity teams, although football was dropped in 1960 for financial reasons. Although just a small/medium sized school, with a student body of slightly over 8,000, the Marquette Warriors (previous school nickname) topped the college basketball world by winning the NCAA Championship in 1977, coached by Al McGuire. They have also appeared in the NCAA Tournament a total of 27 times.

By the way, Marquette’s previous nickname, the Warriors, and its accompanying logo was dropped in 1994 as it was considered disrespectful to Native Americans.
