The origins of Georgetown University date back as far as 1634, although it was not formally founded until 1789. Well known for its academic programs in International Relations, Government and Law, Georgetown counts among its more notable alumni former President Bill Clinton and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. However, if you were to randomly stop someone and ask for the first thing that comes to their mind when you say Georgetown Hoyas, they’ll most likely say college basketball.

Although Georgetown is among the Top 20 athletic programs in the nation, with nationally successful programs in rowing, sailing, lacrosse, and track & field, they Hoyas are most identified with men’s college basketball. Off to a fast start by winning their first ever game over the University of Virgina, 22 – 11, in 1907, the program would only have sporadic success over the next 65 years, until the arrival of Coach John Thompson in 1973.

The Georgetown basketball program would eventually reign supreme in 1984, when they captured their only National Title defeating the University of Houston 84 – 75, led by All American Patrick Ewing.

Now a member of the always competitive Big East Conference, the Hoyas lead the league with 4 regular season titles and 7 conference tournament titles, and have also attended the Big Dance 24 times.

Several Hoyas have also gone on to successful careers in the NBA, including Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning, Allen Iverson and Roy Hibbert. So when considering whether considering whether to purchase a basketball jerseyor other type of sports apparel, you should probably first ask yourself, why are they called the Hoyas if the school mascot is a bulldog?

The actual origins are unknown, but some time after 1866, in an era when the students were well versed in both Latin and Greek, the students invented the mixed language chant of ‘hoya saxa’, which translates roughly as ‘what rocks’. Although the chant most likely refers to either the baseball (started in 1870) or football (1874) teams, by 1828 campus sports writers began to refer to their teams as the Hoyas, instead of the Hilltoppers. Hoyas became the school’s official nickname shortly thereafter. As far as the bulldog is concerned, Jack the Bulldog has been the mascot of the athletic programs since 1962.

So whether you want your Georgetown sports apparel adorned with Jack, Georgetown, or simply HOYAS, you’ve come to the right place.
