Clemson University has such rich sports traditions that you feel compelled to buy as much of their college sports team apparel as you can find. Follow the links on this page and you’ll find all the Clemson Merchandise you could want, and if you need to be reminded about sports traditions, two of my favorites are Howard’s Rock, and running down ‘The Hill”.
The Clemson Tigers are an NCAA Division I University that competes in the Atlantic division of the ACC, and is home to what some have called the most exciting 25 seconds in college football. Before every home football game at Memorial Stadium’s Frank Howard Field, the entire football team runs down “the Hill” from the West stands and onto the field, as a canon fires and the marching band plays “Tiger Rag”. The tradition started out of necessity since before the West Stands were built, the team would get dressed at Fike Field House, then run across and down a grassy hill and onto the field.
The tradition of running down the hill, is preceded by another, the rubbing of Howard’s Rock, which sits on a pedestal at the top of the hill. Howard’s Rock is a piece of white flint rock brought back from Death Valley California by 1919 alumnus S.C. Jones. First placed at the top of the hill in 1966, it was not until a game against Wake Forest in 1967 that legendary football coach Frank Howard told his team that if they gave 110% they could have the privilege of rubbing the rock. After a 23 – 6 Tiger victory, football players have been rubbing the rock before every home game ever since, for good luck.
Did you know that the Tiger Paw logo was was introduced on July 21, 1970, and is taken from a mold of a Bengal Tiger paw from the St Louis Zoo. More interesting is the fact that the South Carolina Beta Chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity has retained the exclusive rights to paint the logo on many of the highways that lead into Clemson.
So the next time your wearing your Clemson football apparel and are driving towards Death Valley for a Tiger’s football game, keep an eye out for those orange Tiger Paws.
If you’re not a Clemson fan and arrived at this page looking for another college, don’ t worry, you can find more college team apparel right here.
